What is an oropharyngeal airway used for?

An oropharyngeal airway is specifically designed to maintain an open airway in patients who are unresponsive or unable to keep their airways clear due to loss of consciousness. By being inserted into the mouth and extending into the oropharynx, it helps to prevent the tongue from obstructing the airway. This device is particularly useful in emergency situations or during certain medical procedures where securing the airway is critical for ventilation and oxygenation.

While clearing secretions is important in airway management, an oropharyngeal airway does not directly accomplish this task. It is also not used for providing oxygen or for gastric suctioning, as those are accomplished with different devices specifically designed for those purposes.
